Budget budget

Short post - main thing at yesterday's Council meeting was budget talk. I had submitted something to the Council meeting previous but new information was to come - yes, must remember next time to note in the minutes that it gets tabled to next meeting.

Tomorrow, Intern Architect meeting! It will be jam packed, and we are not talking the apricot armagnac kind. Survey, possible intern event, etc... and "my" stuff that I touched on in the last blog post.

Talked to someone at the last Steamworks good times. Wouldn't it be great if we could connect UBC with interns who wanted to do critiques at the UBC downtown studio?

And at lunch today, another fabulous idea from an intern-like person - how about a website that reviews firms from the point of view of interns (and intern-like people? Is this too crazy?!

The CIA and You

Wouldn't that be great? The Canadian Intern Architects dot org...

Talked to Stephanie Clancy last night, the Intern Rep in Alberta. She works in Edmonton, at the same office as Vivian Manasc (picture below), who's the president of RAIC. Read Vivian's message at http://www.raic.org/raic/about_us/presidentmessage_e.htm

She and Kate Schwenssen (AIA President) are both female presidents of their respective national architectural associations. About time! I chatted to both at the AIBC conference in June. They are both fantastic people.

I asked Kate, are women in architecture at a disadvantage when it comes to construction questions? She said, (I think...), not necessarily, her husband is an architect too, but she knows more about construction than him. And she said, listen to the people that build, and trust and respect their knowledge.

Stephanie recommended looking into the following:
- Norman Dorf (http://www.are-solutions.com) who does intensive weekend seminars on all three graphic exams;
- David Thaddeus (http://www.areforum.org/forums/forum19/6091.html), who does weekend seminars on both structures exams;
- and Archiflash cards (http://www.archiflash.com). WOW!

She also mentioned that some interns have told her about a specific problem doing a particular exam at Prometric. In which case the appeal is $300 (i.e., more than an exam, and on top of that has to redo the exam and pay for it). Has anyone out there encountered anything unusual?

Anyways, don't forget, Steamworks this Friday 5:30 - bring your office buddies, look for a table with the Good Times sign on it!
