Set for labour

It's Friday! After a week of good intentions of adding a more substantial piece to the blog, I find I just want to get out of the office right now. But here is two seconds worth...

Who am I? How did I get here?

Well, I like all the other interns got a thing in the mail / e-mail re: running for intern rep. It was just me that went for it, so I'm here by acclamation. There have been two other intern reps before me, both I know now better than ever, but Sean Ruthen and I started together at UBC SOA in '97.

What does an intern rep do?

I shuttle between meetings, and am fed in the process. I represent the views and interests of the interns to Council and the Intern Committee; I explain things like the AIBC Governance Policy to Interns. Oh, by the way, I do not speak for the AIBC at all. No way, not me. I believe I'm in as rep for two years. That's official, but there is talk that I'm only in for one year, so that there is more access to the intern rep position by other interns. And also, I'm supposed to get registered and not by an intern for very long...

The AIBC Council does policy. The AIBC staff puts this policy into action. That's the AIBC / Council relationship in a nutshell.

I am part of Council, but I have no vote. I wasn't elected, and I have little direct communication with the 440 interns I'm supposed to represent. So I'm trying to change that with this blog, and with more informal meetups.

So far, there have been one Intern Committee meeting, and one combined Council meeting / Retreat. Not much of a "retreat" as it was held at the AIBC, but it was a good productive time. What are the issues we talked about? Hm, in my fuzzy recollection... the BC government "modernization" strategy (add link...) the new building code... a couple of other things too, but I can't remember, it's in my notes, I'll update this later...

Anyways, have a great Labour Day weekend (i.e. the lack of labour weekend)! We've got a Steamworks meetup going on next Friday ... sign up with intern.meetup.com/22 if you haven't yet already!

Check-in

I admitted to Dorothy today that I have these "AIBC" days where I get all these AIBC-related ideas in my head. Well, one of these was to get a blog up and running. Hopefully this is a worthwhile venture...
