Graphics No. 1, AIBC to UBC Trek, and the Canadian ExAC
Friday beer time, a good time to type a few words before the weekend starts...Announcements, announcements everyone....
- We are looking for another Intern Architect Representative to Council! If you are interested let me know, as I am definately not doing this another year, and I will give you the password to (optionally!) continue this blog, among other things.
- Next workshop is on the first Monday in March for Material and Methods ... mmmm! I will be there as I took and passed the exam, and as part of the IAC volunteered for this one to answer any questions you might have (we each volunteer for one ... but would like if one of you could volunteer to do one you've passed recently!).
- We (IAC) are planning on bringing David Thaddeus back for next Remembrance Day weekend. (shh! it's not officially out yet...)
- We (AIBC) are planning on sessions "soon" on why interns are not getting through the IAP program "effectively". So keep your eyes and ears open for e-blasts from the AIBC on this.
I have my first Graphics exam in two weeks ... Site Planning! Not BT as I wrote last time. An intern I know worked in a planning office for 5 years and failed it. So apparently there is no distinct advantage there... I did get the Norm Dorf book and flipped through it. Just have to sit and go through the software I guess. Anyone have any tips on how to pass this thing?!? The failure rate is far too high.
"We" - the hardworking AIBC ED and L+R staff, wise and esteemed AIBC Council, and the ever fabulous and youthful Intern Architect Committee - are off to collectively Storm the Wa.. oops, nope ... host Good Times at UBC SALA next Friday. The AIBC and Council have been going there for the past 5 years. They noticed last year that they were older than the students. Much older. So I though this year it would be a good idea for the IAC to join the pack, and be that link that I think would be much appreciated by the AIBC and students.
Hot news (for me anyways) on the made-in-Canada for Canadian-interns-except-in BC registration exam came out today on the OAA (Ontario Association of Architects) e-newsletter. Can't link it though as it came through e-mail...
Would you (I assume you are a BC intern) want to participate in the 2-day ExAC and just be registered in Canada? Or would you rather do the current and more onerous NCARB AREs and have the option of all-North America reciprocity? What do you think of 2 kinds of ways of registering architects in Canada (think like an intern, think like a future architect) - does it matter to you? Should there be two standards or one? Click here for OAA's info on ExAC. For NCARB's AREs click here (if you haven't already...).

From the Ontario Association of Architects e-bulletin February 20-March 4 2008 edition:
Examination for Architects in Canada
The first sitting of the ExAC has been delayed
February 22, 2008--The ExAC Committee* has been working intensively on implementing the new examination. The completion objective was June 2008. However, it has been found necessary to delay the examination for several months so that all the quality-control phases for the new examination can be completed. It is also important to the ExAC Committee that interns be informed about the preparatory documentation for the examination well in advance (ideally six months). This became difficult with the planned deadline of June 2008. It is anticipated that the new date for the first sitting of the ExAC will be announced shortly.
The ExAC Committee regrets any inconvenience this may cause. However, given the interest of the profession and the interns themselves, the decision to delay the examination is essential.
The ExAC Committee is pleased to announce that beginning in 2008 the following Canadian architectural associations have agreed to participate in the ExAC:
• Alberta Association of Architects (AAA)
• Architects Association of Prince Edward Island (AAPEI)
• Architects’ Association of New Brunswick (AANB)
• Manitoba Association of Architects (MAA)
• Newfoundland Association of Architects (NAA)
• Nova Scotia Association of Architects (NSAA)
• Northwest Territories Association of Architects (NWTAA)
• Ontario Association of Architects (OAA)
• Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ)
• Saskatchewan Association of Architects (SAA)
Note: At the present time the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) has opted not to participate in the ExAC.The ExAC Web site is in the process of being completed. It will contain all information relevant to the examination, including a preparation guide. Further communications will follow.
*The ExAC Committee is made up of representatives from the Alberta Association of Architects, the Ontario Association of Architects and the Ordre des architectes du Québec.
